One of the main objectives of EGO is to ensure the upgrades of the Virgo antenna.
To that purpose EGO upon decision of the Council supports R&D projects useful in view of these upgrades and more generally for the detection of gravitational waves.

Since its creation EGO has launched and supported two R&D programs.

The 1st EGO supported R&D program was launched in 2002.
After a thorough selection process several projects were approved and supported from 2003 until 2006.
