Mission
The EGO Consortium is opening a position for a candidate who will work as Quality Assurance / Quality Control Engineer in the EGO System Engineering department and the Advanced Virgo+ (AdV+) Project Office.
Activities
The QA/QC Manager is in charge of the following tasks:
- Prepare and keep updated the Quality Management Plan, in coordination with the Project Office.
- Participate to and support contract award activities, in particular through the definition of quality requirements/acceptance criteria for contractors/vendors and suppliers.
- Review procurement documentation such as technical statements of work (Disciplinare d’Appalto) for the inclusion of appropriate Quality and Safety requirements.
- Participate as a member in Evaluation Boards for major competitive calls for tender to interpret, clarify, and resolve quality issues.
- Organize the Quality Assurance (QA) documentation in the technical documentation repository (TDS); make sure that the following documentation is available for the installed equipment, where applicable:
○ Assembly and Integration procedures
○ Acceptance Tests: Procedures and Results (Compliance Report)
○ User Manual, Maintenance Manual.
- Support the project management in validating requirements and final design of AdV+ subsystems as far as quality aspects are concerned, including, when available, material and fabrication specifications.
- Manage the Design, Production Readiness (PRR) and Validation and Reception (VRR) Reviews and following-up of the final integration process, in collaboration with the Integration Manager.
- Check and enforce the traceability of key components associated with on-site installation within the Hardware Inventory and Integration database (HWII) or equivalent tools.
- Identify, acquire, and put in operation any equipment which may be required for the implementation of QA activities (for example in-situ inspection of critical components), unless covered by installation report of the concerned subsystem.
- Collect, organize and distribute Handling, Packaging and Storage QA procedures (such as mirror handling, cleanliness preservation, etc.) concerning all the phases prior to the arrival of the components onsite.
- Promote the implementation of guidelines for standardization (connectors, interfaces, … ) and assure their application in order to facilitate the interconnection of components between different subsystems
- Identify, review, and report QA related problems that require Project Office / Upgrades Coordinator attention. Develop recommendations for corrective action and provide follow-up on corrective/preventive actions.
- Manage the non-conformities, including the associated registry.
The post may require that the selected candidate occasionally works outside of normal working hours, sometimes including nights, weekends and public holidays.
Essential required qualifications and experience
- A Master degree in engineering, physics or a related field;
- at least 12 years of specific professional experience related to the announcement
- Engineering Knowledge: Good understanding of QA/QC principles, standards, and procedures, and general project management principles.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and specifications.
- Experience with quality control documentation.
- Knowledge of inspection and testing procedures
- Good knowledge of the English language is required
- Driving license
Desired qualification and experience
One or more of the following will be an asset:
- Basic understanding of QA/QC software (e.g., SAP QM, QMS tools).
- Basic understanding of coding/scripting (e.g., Python, VBA for automation in QA).
- Technical Proficiency: Proficiency in relevant technical tools and software used in the integration and operation of scientific instruments. This might include CAD software, data acquisition systems, control systems, and simulation tools.
- Familiarity with Gravitational Wave detector technologies
- Safety and Compliance: Knowledge of safety standards and regulatory compliance related to the operation and upgrade of scientific equipment.
- Working knowledge of the Italian language would be an asset for effective collaboration with diverse teams, stakeholders, and local vendors.
Work Context
EGO is an international consortium, founded by INFN and CNRS to foster European collaboration in gravitational-wave research. EGO is located in Cascina, near Pisa – Italy, and hosts and operates the gravitational-wave detector Virgo, a 3 km-long laser interferometer (ITF). The Virgo project involves the participation of about 130 institutions with more than 800 scientists, engineers and technicians from France, Italy, the Netherlands and other 13 European countries.

Selection procedure
Only candidates who meet the above essential required qualifications and experience are admitted to the selection procedure. The evaluation of the candidates admitted to the procedure is assigned to a Selection Board appointed by the Director of EGO. The Selection Board will determine the evaluation criteria in the first meeting. The first phase of the selection will be based on a review of the Application Forms and other documents received in line with the above-mentioned essential and desired requirements. Only candidates who have obtained the minimum score established by the Selection Board in the first meeting will be able to access to the second phase of the selection, which will consist of an interview. During the interview the Selection Board will verify the requested language proficiency and the other desired qualifications and experience.
At the end of the interviews the Selection Board will draw up a ranking of the candidates who obtained at least the minimum score established during the first meeting.
The completion of the hiring is subject to Italian law D.Lgs. 81/08 art.41 “Sorveglianza Sanitaria”.
The EGO Consortium has the right not to proceed with the recruitment.
