Missions

The EGO Consortium is opening a position for a candidate who will work as Integration Physicist in the Advanced Virgo+ (AdV+) Project Office.

Activities

The selected candidate will work as the on-site Integration Physicist (IP) within the AdV+ Project Office (P.O.). The IP is responsible for organizing and coordinating the AdV+ on-site installation activities. The IP collaborates with P.O. colleagues concerning the on-site integration aspects of the global mid-and long-term planning.

He/she ensures that the process of organizing on-site works and treating work requests will proceed smoothly, and that works touching the infrastructure are correctly coordinated with the EGO infrastructure department. The corresponding IP duties include:

  • The IP coordinates the on-site works. He keeps himself/herself acquainted about all on-site activities going on; in case of problems or delays, he/she coordinates the solution process, involving, where necessary, the AdV+ Upgrade Coordinator, the AdV+ Technical Manager and the concerned subsystem manager. Through his/her knowledge of the status of works, he/she contributes to the regular updating of the on-site installation planning.
  • Within the P.O., the IP is responsible for checking and dispatching all requests for work on site. The IP is responsible for discussing the proposed work with all concerned people, AdV+ management and concerned EGO Departments, and informing the requester of the outcome. These discussions and decisions usually take place during the regular on-site planning meeting.
  • Likewise, all requests for changing previously agreed-upon work plans have to be addressed to the IP. The IP will obtain an agreement in the same way as described above.
  • The IP is the interface for all requests coming from the SubSystem Managers (SSMs) concerning EGO support (personnel, equipment, etc). He/she verifies with the concerned heads of Department the availability / suitability of the requested resources. Through his/her knowledge of local conditions and resources, he/she assists the groups working on installation in finding solutions for day-to-day problems.
  • During his/her frequent inspections of the ongoing works, the IP is attentive at potential safety hazards, pointing them out to the involved workers, to the EGO safety officer (RSPP) and to the Responsible for the works (Responsabile dei Lavori) such that a solution can be found. In the case of a risk of interference between works, he/she suggests to the P.O., in agreement with the RSPP, amendments to the working plan in order to avoid them.
  • The IP supports the System Engineer in identifying the need for installation/operation procedures and contributes, in collaboration with the Technical Manager and subsystem managers, to the elaboration of corresponding documents (checklists etc.).
  • The IP participates in keeping the collaboration informed about the progress of works through presentations at weekly meetings, collaboration meetings etc.
  • The IP keeps a short term planning of the project activities, which is regularly updated, based on information exchanged at the weekly coordination meetings, on-site work progress, direct discussions with concerned people including SSMs and the Technical Manager.

The post may that the selected candidate works outside of normal working hours, sometimes including nights, weekends and public holidays, and may require shift work.
