On Wednesday, May 13th at 11:00 AM, in the EGO Auditorium, David Shoemaker — scientist at MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) and former spokesperson of the LIGO Scientific Collaboration — will present a seminar titled “Cosmic Explorer: The Other Next-Generation GW Observatory”.The talk will last approximately 40–45 minutes and will be followed by a Q&A session.
David Shoemaker has been working on the interferometric detection of gravitational waves since the early 1980s. After positions at the Max Planck Institute in Garching, Germany, and the CNRS in Paris, he returned to MIT in 1989, where he led the Advanced LIGO project. From 2017 to 2019, he served as spokesperson of the LIGO Scientific Collaboration. He is currently coordinating international efforts toward next-generation ground-based detectors and is involved in the technical and organizational aspects of the space mission LISA.
