Let teachers discover the experimental activities of INFN research laboratories and tell them about cutting-edge research in the field of fundamental physics, that is the goal of PID! Today, October 14th, marks the start of the 2024-2025 edition of the PID Programma INFN Docenti project, a refresher course for high school science teachers organised by INFN in its national laboratories.
Starting today, 24 teachers from different regions of Italy (Abruzzo, Emilia-Romagna, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Lazio, Liguria, Lombardy, Marche, Piedmont, Sardinia, Tuscany, Veneto and Umbria) will be visiting the European Gravitational Observatory (EGO) for five days, and they will attend seminars and events and take part in experimental activities dedicated to gravitational wave observation techniques. EGO is in fact home to one of the world’s three large gravitational detectors, the Virgo interferometer, protagonist of the great discoveries on gravitational waves, whose visit will be one of the central moments of the course.
In particular, on October 16th from 4.30 p.m. to 5.30 p.m. there will be the multi-messenger astronomy event ‘Women listening to the cosmos’, with researchers Pia Astone and Julia Casanueva, which will also be streamed on the YouTube channels of INFN di Terza Missione, EGO and Sanoma Italia
After this first course at the European Gravitational Observatory, two more PID project courses will follow this school year, one at INFN’s Legnaro National Laboratories from 21 to 25 November, and one at INFN’s Southern National Laboratories to be held in spring 2025.
PID – INFN Programme for Teachers is a project created in 2018 to enhance the role of scientific disciplines in the education of students and support teachers in teaching STEM disciplines. Since 2020, it has been realised in collaboration with Pearson Italia, today Sanoma Italia, a Finnish group and European leader in the education sector. Collaboration that in recent years has also led to the realisation of the online courses PID@HOME.
