The Future
For the 10 next years, there is an intense program of operation and upgrades with the current detector and infrastructure.
EGO is participating to the proposal of a European 3rd Generation Gravitational wave antenna, called Einstein Telescope, to be included in the European Roadmap under construction of the European Strategy Forum for Research Infrastructures. The Einstein Telescope (design and implementation phase 2008-2035, operation 2035-2085) will be deployed in Europe with leading candidate sites: SoS Enatos at Sardinia and the triangular point at the border between the Netherlands, Germany and Belgium.
The current upgrades of Advanced Virgo are a testing ground and de-risking factor of a series of technologies of gravitational wave detectors of 3rd Generation including: state of the art vacuum and cryogenics technologies, quantum sensing, smart and resilient civil infrastructures, innovative solutions for computing and data analysis, including the distribution of low latency alerts among continents as well as new data harvesting methods (big data analytics, machine learning,..).
Many synergies exist also with the gravitational wave space mission LISA, in particular on what concerns data science.
Finally, may of the techniques developed for classical interferometers, in particular protection of low frequency environmental noise and high frequency quantum squeezing techniques, can contribute to the acceleration and the development of “4th Generation” Atomic Interferometer antenna.
